Engineering Study Abroad

There are many opportunities for TCNJ engineering students to study abroad while also working towards their degree. The TCNJ Center for Global Engagement offers students at The College programs that can be tailored to individual interests and needs.

As a student, you may choose to study abroad for an entire year, one semester, or over the summer and winter breaks. While abroad you may choose to complete Liberal Learning (general education) requirements, or courses to fulfill degree requirements. Instruction in English is available at many non-English speaking countries, so you may still study in a country where you are not fluent in the local language.

Alumni Perspective

Study Abroad in South Africa

Study Abroad in South Africa- Craig Cedermark ’07
I chose to study abroad at the University of Kwazulu-Natal in Durban, South Africa because it was the most exotic place on the list of available locations that offered engineering courses taught in English. Spending a semester in South Africa was my first introduction to working closely with people from different countries and cultures. My classes were all taught by South African professors and the student body was made up almost entirely of students from southern African countries. The experience of being fully immersed in a distant country helped prepare me for my job as a product development engineer developing medical devices with teams that were often composed of people from three different continents. Also, studying engineering in a country that has vastly different developmental needs from the US exposed me to the issues foreign universities and governments place focus on in teaching their next generation of engineers. In addition to the great educational experiences, studying abroad was the most fun five months of my life. I made lifelong friends travelling through game reserves, hiking the Drakensberg Mountains, and exploring neighboring countries. I found studying abroad to be an incredibly rewarding experience and would recommend it highly to any interested students.

Maymester/Winter Session Study Abroad Courses

In this Maymester program (summer session), students will earn credits towards ENG 470 or IDS 470 (1 unit, Liberal Learning elective for Literary, Visual and Performing Arts; and Global requirements). The course abroad includes many site visits to locations with sustainable engineering practices and to several of Australia’s leading universities that study sustainability and engineering, as well as a number of cultural activities. In this faculty-led trip, a TCNJ faculty member travels with the group and serves as instructor for the course.

Center for Global Engagement

The Center for Global Engagement at TCNJ brings together students and faculty interested in international education – study abroad, internships, short-term, faculty-led programs overseas, and service and volunteering abroad – with visiting scholars and international students from all over the world.  The Center’s staff works closely with TCNJ undergraduate students and faculty to internationalize all aspects of campus life.

Featured Engineering Schools Abroad

The following institutions showcased below offer engineering programs that may appeal to TCNJ School of Engineering students for study abroad. Whenever available, offerings reviewed by the School of Engineering faculty are listed with the corresponding TCNJ equivalencies. These institutions are not the only study abroad opportunities for TCNJ students. The School of Engineering at TCNJ will work with students to explore opportunities for study abroad at other institutions, and consider their offerings for transfer credit.
